RENEWING LONG-STAY RESIDENCE PERMITS

A long-stay residence permit allows a foreign citizen to reside and work in Spain indefinitely under the same conditions as Spaniards.

Foreigners must have in Spain continuously for at least five years in order to apply for a long-stay residence permit.  Continuously means that your stay has not been interrupted by absences of more than six consecutive months and no more than ten months in total over the full five years.

Renewing this permit takes place after the initial five years.  You must submit the renewal application and corresponding documents within 60 days prior to the TIE expiration date (foreigner identification card).  It is important to keep this in mind because if you renew the card after it has expired, it may result in a disciplinary proceedings.

Please consult our immigration lawyers specializing in residence permit renewal if you have futher doubts or questions.
